I Quit Smoking

I started smoking when I was about 13, just a few at first.

Me smoking a cigarette after crawling
out from under a hospital where we were
working. I sure was enjoying it!
By the time I was 17 I was like a smoke stack. When I joined the Air Force on my 17th birthday in 1974, you could get Marlboros for $1.99 a carton.

I continued smoking for the next 39 years. Heavily.

In the early 2000's I spent about 6 months working in Mexico (on 14 days, off 6 days, rinse and repeat). I had found another cheap source for cigarettes. $10.00 a carton for Marlboro Reds.

Cowboy Killers.

I smoked so much that the Mexicans I worked with just called me El Fumar. (smoker). I even had one of the guys tell me "Senor Clint, you smoke too much, I worry about you."

In 2011 I was diagnosed with emphysema. I would have to quit smoking now.

So I tried e-cigarettes for the first time. They were a revolution. But at the time they were still being developed. I quit smoking real cigs for about 3 weeks, then it was back to El Fumar.

I wheezed my way through another year.

In late 2012 I made a decision to quit smoking real cigarettes and just vape e-cigarettes. There had been vast improvements in the e-cigarette technology. I was successful. I went 1 year and 3 months without a real cigarette!

Then one night when I had worked about 12 hours straight and I was offered a cigarette. I thought I deserved one. So I smoked 1 cigarette.

2 weeks later hello El Fumar.

But this time it was different.

During the year I had quit smoking my health improved immensely. I had stopped the coughing and wheezing. My bones and joints had stopped hurting. I could breathe!

When I started back smoking the symptoms all came back with a vengeance. I hacked, I coughed up globs of brown stuff in the morning. All my bones hurt, I felt weak. I even went into a depression.

This couldn't go on.

I can happily report that today (November 23, 2014) I am again smoke free for the last 2 months. I only use e-cigarettes. All the good benefits of not smoking have returned. I feel great again.

Although I still want a cigarette and I envy those who can smoke at will, I know now that I will never start smoking again. It was much easier quitting this time. I can't go back to being weak, in constant pain and depressed.

E-cigarettes are going to prolong my life. And it will be a life of much better quality.

Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist and inventor, who worked as a research pharmacist for a company producing ginseng products, is credited with the invention of the modern electronic cigarette.

I think he deserves a medal. He has probably saved more lives than anyone in history.
